Joy’s  Story

Joy studied drawing and printmaking at SUNY Binghamton, New York (now Binghamton University) where she received her BA degree. A few years later, she studied advertising art at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, PA and began “Joyet Arts”, a freelance graphic arts business. Joy considers her most productive years to have been since her move to Waynesboro, VA in 1987 when she became a studio artist at the Shenandoah Valley Art Center

She uses different mediums & tools for the characteristics they impart to the subject. Her favorite three have been oils, acrylics and pastels. Her earliest portraits were pastels and, now, are predominately oils which she begins with value studies. She uses acrylics for her more expressive works. Recently watercolor has been added to the group – a medium she shied away from for years & is now delighted with especially in combination with ink or colored pencils

Joy has been an exhibiting member of The Warehouse Gallery in Luray, VA, the Shenandoah Valley Art Center and exhibited for several years at the Co-Art Gallery in Staunton, VA Her work has been at the Annual Bath County Art Show, has been juried in at The Art at the Mill Show in Berryville, VA, also juried in at the Gloucester Art Center. She is a member of the Central Virginia Watercolor Guild where her work has been accepted several times for the juried CVWG Annual Exhibition at the McGuffy Art Center in Charlottesville, VA.

She has received numerous awards and has raised money for The Salvation Army’s hurricane relief work and their World Services Fund. Her hope is her work will bring enjoyment and a smile and lift the human spirit.
